Black Sesame and Miso Rice Krispies Treats
reader beware! you will likely eat this entire tray in one day.
WHY ARE RICE KRISPIES TREATS SO GOOD!?
I feel like I say this a lot but this is definitely not something my mom (or dad) ever made (or bought!) for us growing up.
And they’re SO SIMPLE. First of all, the fact that the recipe is right there on the box of cereal… you gotta make it! Plus, it doesn’t even require a lot of ingredients or cooking! Standard Rice Krispies treats only have 3 ingredients (the cereal, the marshmallows, the butter).
These don’t have many more ingredients (and you can buy them online if you can’t find them in your store!). They’re savory and sweet with a hint of salt and a bit of gooeyness and you’re absolutely gonna love them.
The black sesame paste was leftover from my Natasha cake-making days and I always have miso paste hanging out in my fridge. I truly have no idea what possessed me to make these but I was like, BLACK SESAME AND MISO RICE KRISPIES TREATS WOULD BE SO GOOD, and so I made them and I was right and happy.
Very happy.
I’ve made these a few times now, and the most recent time I decided to make them with EVEN MORE marshmallows (1 pound, to be exact) because I wanted them to be EVEN GOOEY-ER… but I have to say…they were also almost…TOO sticky? They’re kind of great with just the standard (10-ounce) bag of marshmallows. Plus, if you use more marshmallows, then you have to buy another bag of marshmallows and will ultimately have some marshmallows leftover.
What I am trying to tell you is that while I DO recommend adding more marshmallows to these if you end up making them (because more is always fun), maybe just use like 3 ounces more, not 6.
My friend Nora tried the first iteration of these and suggested that I share the recipe for SPOOKY SZN because of their black / gray color, so here we are with some ghoulishly good treats for you to make and enjoy with some friends this October.

10 ounces|183 grams marshmallows

Cook, stirring, until melted and slightly smooth, about 3 minutes longer, then stir in the Rice Krispies and sesame seeds. Remove from the heat and stir until combined, then spread into an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with some more sesame seeds and sea salt. Cool, then cut into squares.
