REVISITED: Black Sesame and Miso Rice Krispies Treats
a look back on one of my favorite recipes
We’ve got a lot of new people here, and I figured some of you may not have received this recipe straight into your inbox before.
I can’t believe that it’s been ONE WHOLE YEAR since the birth of this recipe, but here we are.
My friend Nora tried the first iteration of these and suggested that I share the recipe for SPOOKY SZN because of their black / gray color, which was a very good idea and why I am resharing them.
HApPy HaLLoWeEn!!!
It’s a great recipe, if not incredibly simple. I recently made this recipe again to share with friends, but then the hang was cancelled and I ended up eating all of them myself…whoops.
Rice Krispie treats don’t have a lot of ingredients and don’t take a heck of a long time to make. This particular recipe doesn’t have many more ingredients than the original recipe that you’ll find on the box of cereal—just miso and black sesame paste (both of which you can find online if you can’t find them in your store; I’ve linked them in the ingredient list below).
They’re savory and sweet with a hint of salt and a bit of gooeyness and you’re absolutely gonna love them.
I love love love black sesame paste and I typically always have miso paste hanging out in my fridge. I truly have no idea what possessed me to make these but I was like, BLACK SESAME AND MISO RICE KRISPIE TREATS WOULD BE SO GOOD, and so I made them and I was right and happy.
Very happy.
Has anyone made these yet? Comment below and share the love!
What scary movies did you watch this month? I’m a baby when it comes to scary movies, but a friend was recently talking about Practical Magic (with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) and I thought: that’s a Halloween(ish) movie that I can get behind.

Makes 1 (8-inch) square
Prep time: 10 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS
â…“ cup|100 grams black sesame paste
2 tablespoons|40 grams red miso paste
4 tablespoons|56 grams unsalted butter
10 ounces|183 grams marshmallows
5 cups|150 grams puffed rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
1 tablespoon black sesame seeds, plus more to taste
1 tablespoon toasted white sesame seeds, plus more to taste
flaky sea salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS
Line an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper. Heat the sesame paste and miso over medium heat, breaking it up a bit, until soft, about 3 minutes. Add the butter and lower the heat to medium-low. Cook until melted and combined, 2 to 3 minutes more, then stir in the marshmallows. Cook, stirring, until melted and slightly smooth, about 3 minutes longer, then stir in the Rice Krispies and sesame seeds. Remove from the heat and stir until combined, then spread into an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with some more sesame seeds and sea salt. Cool, then cut into squares.
I love this recipe so much! I make it all time. This one and your vice chocolate chip cookie recipe are in constant dessert rotation.
Farideh, I am obsessed with this recipe and all variations. We did these with the maple marshmallows from TJ's and they were incredible!!!
